
Dealing with Electrical Noise in Big UV Curing Lines
If you’ve got a shop full of large-scale printing presses, you know exactly how loud the electrical environment is. I’m not talking about the noise you hear with your ears—I mean the electrical chaos. Between the high-frequency power supplies and those heavy motor loads, there’s a lot of “noise” flying around. If your UV lamp drivers aren’t built to handle that, things go sideways fast. You’ll see flickering, bulbs burning out way too early, or curing speeds that just won’t stay consistent. It’s a headache nobody needs.
How we keep things quiet
When we build our UV solutions, we spend a lot of time on the filtering and the ballast shielding. We use heavy-duty EMI filters to stop those messy emissions from leaking back into your grid. Why does that matter? Because it keeps your UV system from tripping breakers or confusing the PLC logic on your press. It just works. Then there’s the grounding. In my experience, bad grounding is where most factory UV systems fall apart. We use low-impedance grounding straps to push that noise away from the lamp arc. This keeps the plasma stable and the light steady.
Staying steady when the power dips
Stability is about more than just keeping the light on. It’s about making sure your UV output stays exactly where it needs to be, even when some other massive piece of machinery kicks on and causes a voltage dip. We use regulated power supplies that adjust for those fluctuations in real-time. The result? A steady cure. No weird “zebra stripes” on your work.
A few things to keep in mind
Here is the trade-off: this level of shielding and filtering takes up more room. The power supplies are bigger and the housing is heavier. You can’t just squeeze these into a tiny box without thinking about the heat. These filters get a bit warm, so make sure your cooling fans can handle the extra load. You don’t want the system to throttle its power just because it’s overheating. And if you’re looking for a drop-in replacement for an old line, double-check your clearance. Our shielded units are a bit bulkier than the generic, unshielded ones you’ll find elsewhere. But that’s the price for a system that doesn’t freak out when the rest of the shop turns on.
